Help us build a new shelter!

Since our founding in 1988, the Nassau Humane Society has found new homes and new lives for thousands of homeless dogs and cats. We provide food, a no-kill shelter and medical care for the abandoned, the abused, the surrendered and the rescued. Our mostly-volunteer organization strives daily to bring people and pets together – enriching the lives of both.
Building a New Shelter
The Board of Trustees has launched an Animal Rescue Center Capital Campaign to build a new shelter to provide temporary homes to the 500 animals we adopt yearly.
The Need
The current shelter is deteriorated beyond repair. Despite the diligent efforts of volunteers and staff to make the kennels as comfortable as possible, there is no question that the environment is stressful for the animals.

We can no longer allow for this shelter to pass as acceptable in our community.
Shelter inadequacies include:
- The current facility is more than 40 years old and dilapidated.
- The shelter’s outdoor dog kennels provide minimal protection from cold winters and hot summers.
- Our cattery is a small, old trailer that was originally meant to be temporary.
- Inadequate medical and health facilities.
The Difference
Our new shelter will provide additional space for animal rescue and indoor protection from the weather. The reduced stress will be healthier for our adoptable animals, creating an environment conducive to the bonding between pets and their new families.
Your Support

We need your generosity to make this long-awaited, much-needed shelter a reality. You can help by making a pledge of financial support. Naming rights are available for the entire facility and for many of its important components, such as the medical facilities and individual kennels. For pledges of $500 or more, your name or the name of a loved one – human or animal – will be included on our Wall of Honor Plaque. Or, for $1,000, on an individual floor tile.
Together we can ensure that all the homeless animals in our community have a warm, safe place to live while waiting on their forever home
